Volunteer Work

Interests
I enjoy using my talents and abilities in volunteer work. Much of my work is related to church activities, but I enjoy working with other community organizations as well.

The first example of my volunteer work was while I was a student at Vernon College. There, I prepared a slide-tape presentation for the Vernon Chamber of Commerce.

I had several opportunities to do volunteer work in senior college, including performing as a deejay for a benefit dance-a-thon.

Later, in my job as Media Specialist at Vernon College, I did work for the Wilbarger United Fund campaign, including producing a cable TV telethon and, for a number of years, I also prepared slide-tape and video presentations for the United Fund.

Karon had Type I diabetes, and we both became involved in the American Diabetes Association. I served on the state board and as a volunteer leader. I served on a national ADA committee. I produced video and educational presentations for the state affiliate and local chapter.

I have worked with the Boy Scouts of America, Northwest Texas Council, as well as the Greenbelt District. I produced videos for the Council and served as District Chairman.

I worked with the American Cancer Society as emcee for the Relay for Life, a role I performed for ten years.

I have done a number of other volunteer tasks, including serving as announcer for the Santa Rosa Palomino Club and producing a video for United Samaritan Services of Vernon (U.S.S.V).

In the past few years, I have become involved with the Amarillo Area Super Kids Classic, a soapbox derby style race for children with special needs. I was emcee and deejay for three years and served as spokesman for the organization.

My philosophy of volunteering is that God gave me a set of fairly unique abilities. One of the best ways to serve Him is to use those abilities to help others. There are a number of talents that I do not possess, therefore, the least I can do is use those that I have been given.
